Storm damage roof repair in Pulaski, Columbia & North Alabama
Hail and straight-line wind don’t always leave a hole in the ceiling. A lot of storm damage is quiet: a shingle that lifted and re-sealed with a crease, hail bruises that crack the mat under the granules, or a gutter that pulled loose and now dumps water against the foundation. Left alone, small damage becomes a leak a season later.
VolBuild is a TN Residential Building Contractor (BC-A #72915) with 25+ years of experience and owner Eric McMillan has personally managed 6,000+ construction jobs. We inspect, photograph what we find and hand you a written estimate, so you can decide what to do next with the facts in front of you.
What storm damage looks like
On the roof
- Hail hits on shingles: dark, round spots where granules were knocked off, or soft “bruises” that feel spongy when pressed.
- Wind damage: shingles missing, folded back, or creased across the top where they lifted and dropped.
- Exposed or torn underlayment at ridges, rakes and valleys.
- Lifted flashing around chimneys, walls and pipe boots.
Around the house
- Granules piled at downspout outlets after a storm.
- Dents in gutters, downspouts, vents and A/C fins. Soft metal shows hail size and direction better than shingles do.
- Split or dented siding and broken window screens on the storm-facing side.
Inside
- Fresh water stains on ceilings or around light fixtures, damp attic insulation, or daylight through the roof deck.
Safety first: don’t climb a wet or damaged roof. Most of this can be checked from the ground, a ladder at the gutter line, or the attic.
What to do after a storm damages your roof
- Make it safe. Stay clear of downed lines, and keep people out of rooms with sagging or wet ceilings.
- Photograph everything before anything is moved or cleaned up: wide shots of each side of the house, close-ups of damage, and the date.
- Stop more water from getting in. A temporary tarp or patch limits interior damage. Keep the receipts.
- Get a written estimate from a licensed local contractor before you sign anything.
- Be careful with door-knockers after big storms. Check the license yourself at verify.tn.gov in Tennessee or with the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board.
The Tennessee Association of Roofing Contractors advises homeowners to hire only licensed contractors and to ask whether the licensed contractor’s own employees will do the work.
Repair or replace?
Localized wind damage (a few missing or creased shingles) can often be repaired. Widespread hail bruising, damage across several roof planes, or an older roof that won’t take a matching repair usually points to replacement. For reference, a full roof replacement with VolBuild typically runs $8,000–$25,000. Size, pitch, tear-off layers, decking repairs and material choice decide where your roof lands in that range.
Tear-off vs. layover: under the International Residential Code a new layer can’t go over a roof that already has two or more layers. Those roofs must be torn off to the deck.
Storm damage FAQs
What should I do first after a storm damages my roof?
Make it safe, photograph the damage, stop more water from getting in with a temporary cover, then get a written estimate from a licensed local contractor.
What does storm damage on a roof look like?
Dark round hail marks or soft bruises on shingles, missing or creased shingles, lifted flashing, granules piling at downspouts, and dents in gutters and vents.
What is the “25% rule” for roofing?
It comes from the Florida Building Code, which limits patching more than 25% of a roof in 12 months unless the whole roof is brought up to code. It is not a Tennessee or Alabama statute.
Do you serve Columbia and Maury County?
Yes. See our Columbia page and Columbia roofing page.
